Cost-efficient and diverse drilling operations - ExcaDrill with Doofor hammer gear

By: Juha Kuusjärvi in Konepörssi December 2011

Kuopion Teho-Louhinta Oy is a construction company that was set up by two brothers, Janne and Manne Eskelinen in 1995. Excavation works have always been at the centre of the company's operations. The company also performs other types of earthmoving works and has experience in, for example, contracting on building renovation works that include chipping, demolition, grinding, milling and also diamond drilling and sawing.

The company works on many types of excavation sites. In densely-built city centres and in renovation sites they perform special excavation operations and building foundation works, and mass excavations in crushing plants. The company has approximately 25 employees.

Before starting their own business, both men had experience in the mining industry. When they started their own company, they began to work using manually operated equipment which is still used on sites where it is best suited for. Soon they started to use drill rigs and at one stage the company owned three drill rigs. They purchased their first ExcaDrill drilling machine in 2002. Due to the positive experience, the four drilling units they are currently using are all ExcaDrill machines.

Diversity as an advantage
In the beginning, ExcaDrill products were chosen as the manufacturing company was located nearby. The familiar salesman Vesa Lappi and the nearby maintenance services guaranteed a relationship that has based on mutual trust. "Nowadays we take care of equipment maintenance by ourselves as we currently employ two service technicians. During busy periods we might have to purchase some maintenance services. Spare parts are widely available for this Finnish equipment and they offer a 100% match. All in all, the cost/quality ratio is excellent," says Janne Eskelinen.

"ExcaDrill is very useful, as it isn't just a drill but in can be equipped with another tool in just a few minutes.

In the cost per drilled meter the drilling equipment's share is remarkable." Doofor hammers have proven to be drilling equipment friendly. We have also used other hammers, so it is easy to say that drill rods and drill shanks have a longer lifespan when they are used with Doofor hammer gear," says Janne Eskelinen.

ExcaDrill drilling machines and Doofor hammer gears have turned out to be versatile and cost efficient. Janne Eskelinen is very satisfied with the properties.

Cooperative testing
The smallest of the four ExcaDrill drilling machines used by Kuopion Teho-Louhinta is the ExcaDrill 22A which the smallest model in the ExcaDrill range. It is mounted into a 10-tonne caterpillar excavator. The machine was taken into use in 2002, and it is still equipped with the original Doofor hammer which is in perfect working condition. The ExcaDrill 38A is mounted onto an 18.5-tonne caterpillar excavator and the two ExcaDrill 45A machines are mounted onto 32-tonne basic excavators.

The long experience in the use of drills and a large selection of machinery has led Kuopion Teho-Louhinta into cooperating in terms of testing with Junttan Oy, the company that manufactures ExcaDrill. There have been many suggestions on how to improve the products and the companies have been in contact on a weekly basis. Now they are testing Doofor's new hammer model DF700 in the Excadrill 45A. The hammer is the most powerful in their selection. It is more powerful by a few kilowatts and its rolling torque is more than 300 Nm higher than in the DF600 hammer, which used to be the largest model and is built on the same frame. In the DF700, the largest recommended hole size is 127 mm and in DF600 it is 89 mm.

"We have only been using the DF700 for one month and the first experiences are positive. We feel that this one is more powerful than the DF600 which we used earlier. Anyway, the hammer from the 600-series has also been a very good hammer. We have been using the DF600 on the other 45A for 18 months and have opened it only once for basic maintenance and there were no signs of wear. During this testing we have already tested hammers from two other brands and their performance hasn't been up to the Doofor hammer's level.

Driller's favourite
Janne Eskelinen is happy that his workforce is motivated and has a long-term commitment. Every now and then students come to take part in work experience projects and some of these students have actually been employed in the company.

Five years ago Janne Sutinen participated in an excavation course and had practical training in Kuopion Teho-Louhinta. He was employed by the company and therefore serves as a good example of a successful work experience project. Sutinen has mostly been drilling with ExcaDrill drilling machines because he didn't have many chances to use a drill rig at school and during his practical training Kuopion Teho-Louhinta was already working with ExcaDrill machines.

"It is easy to learn to drill with these machines," Sutinen says. "Regardless of the size, all of these are quite similar. I have mainly been drilling building foundation works in urban settlements but have also been involved in crushing rocks in the crushing plant and have participated in other drilling works too."

"ExcaDrills are good drilling machines and they are really powerful. Their reach is unique and it is really useful in channel excavations."

"When compared to the brand we used earlier, the Doofor hammer is easier to drill with. Doofor works more efficiently especially in varying rock ground. On the whole, Doofor's products are more user friendly," says Sutinen.

A versatile use with the basic machine is a clear advantage for the ExcaDrill. In just a couple of minutes, an excavator is transformed from a hammering machine into a drilling machine.

Junttan in Headlines - X-Factor

	X-Factor -The New Pile Drivers

Junttan PMx piling rig with Shark hammer combines greater productivity with less noise and fewer vibrations

by: Kees Beijer in Bouwmaterieel Benelux December 2011

New generation of pile-driving rigs
During the last Bauma, Junttan launched the PMx series, a new generation of pile-drivers with significant improvements in terms of operation, monitoring and maintenance. As a result, the piling rigs can be put into service in a way that is even more reliable, safe and efficient than ever before.
Van den Heuvel from Werkendam would therefore like to introduce this unique series to the Benelux countries. The series consists of four types: PMx-20, PMx-22, PMx-24 and PMx-25.
The difference between the models can be found, among other things, in the weight and the capacity of the drivers. The heart of the machine is the new X-control system, which features versatile adjustment, operation and maintenance options.

This intelligent system has been fully developed by Junttan so that the operation, pile processing and instruments of the pile-driving rig link up perfectly with the machine’s user interface. The CAN bus-driven system consists of reliable components that have been tested under extreme conditions.
After all, the entire system, including its individual parts, has been tested over a period of years in various Junttan machines.

X-Intelligence helps the driver, allowing him or her to fully concentrate on the safe operation of the machine. Four cameras, which can be integrated into the display of the control system, make the driver more aware of what is happening around the piling rig. Furthermore, the PMx offers easier and safer access through stronger and wider walkways and various stairs around the machine. To improve the working conditions for the operator, the safety equipment in the cabin has been renewed and is now even more practical than before.

A high level of reliability is achieved by using modern materials and manufacturing techniques for the leader, upper slide, horizontal extension table, pile arms, etcetera. New is the frame that serves as a base model for all four types. The differences lie in the equipment that is specific to a certain model. The undercarriage is wider, has a solid structure and provides excellent stability even in the most challenging of circumstances.

High reliability
Junttan's future-oriented vision and a detailed focus on product development ensure that new features are compatible with existing products.
The modular construction allows the machine to be updated at any time and new features are quick and easy to add. The full hydraulic power system with a third load-sensing pump makes the PMx more navigable and manageable.

In addition, the new X-control system creates higher reliability. It continuously monitors the operation of the machine and report unusual situations. Such situations are also recorded in a log so that they can be investigated at a later time. Often, errors can be quickly identified and even rectified without the need to call on a service technician. The versatile diagnostic properties of the PMx enable more efficient and better targeted preventive maintenance of the foundation machine. The available optional arctic kit (extra heating) or tropical kit (larger T8 instead of T6 coolers) ensure reliability in extreme circumstances.

PMx machines are very durable, have a high residual value and guarantee even faster, safer and more efficient operation. XIntelligence registers everything concerning pile handling in order to optimise the piling processes. Maximum productivity is achieved when using a PMX model in combination with Junttan's brand new Shark hammer (SHK series). The acceleration rate of this hydraulic piling hammer has been optimised in order to obtain the maximum efficiency possible in power transmission to the pile. Using the same impact and ram weight, a higher stroke rate and hence a higher production rate is achieved. Furthermore, the Shark hammer is characterised by a noise level that is over 10 dB lower than the level of traditional hammers. Unique solutions prevent noise production by the hammer and the base frame has been redesigned to prevent sound vibrations. In late August, Van den Heuvel showed many interested members of the piling industry the difference in sound and vibrations between a traditional hammer and the Shark SHK100-5.

Responding to current trends
Piling Company H. van Dieren carried out the demonstrations and confirmed the benefits. The company from IJsselmuiden was also able to perform extensive testing of the Junttan’s Shark hammer in the course of a project in Almere. "This new hammer is indeed quieter and generates fewer vibrations," manager Harry van Dieren responds when asked. "Moreover, the piles go into the ground faster." And so Junttan again makes good on its reputation as an innovator in the field of piling. All of this has not only resulted in specific modifications to reduce the level of noise, but has also increased productivity by 9 to 18 percent, owing to a higher speed and a lower drop height. That way, the impact remains the same and a higher frequency increases productivity. Junttan products are already known for their high quality, reliability and excellent performance.

With the intelligent X-control system, the PMx series takes this a step further and scores high points when it comes to environmental friendliness on account of lower fuel consumption and ditto carbon emissions. The same applies to the Shark hammer that responds to current market trends as well, such as reducing noise and vibration nuisance.

Junttan in Headlines - Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Grounds Rehabilitation

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Grounds Rehabilitation

Lincoln Memorial gets a facelift: Mid-size construction company tackles huge historic job

By: Heather Hudson in Piledriver Q1, 2012

You can forgive the crew members of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting Pool Grounds Rehabilitation Project if they sometimes get the feeling they’re being watched. Aside from the millions of tourists who flock to the hallowed ground they’re restoring in Wasgington , DC, they’ve also been under the watchful eyes of the infamous 19-foot marble scultpture of Abraham Lincoln himself.

When the $ 30,7 million facelift is complete in April 2012, after 18 months of exhaustive work, it promises to rise up to meet the American legend it was built to honor back in 1922.

Corman Costruction , one of the mid-Atlantic region’s largest heavy construction contractors, has taken on the massive job. Despite working on projects like the 2,300-foot Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Virginia and an 11-bridge I-95/I-694 interchange, even they have never taken on a project of this magnitude.

With just under 600 employees, Corman Construction survived the recession of the last several years by teaming up with other contractors. Project Engineer Tom Mulcahy says they’re now getting back into smaller jobs and more utility and pipe work. The reflecting pool restoration was considered a good opportunity to strike out on their own in a more meaningful way while sub-contracting some of the components.

How it all began

One can imagine the grandeur that architects had in mind when installing the almost 2,500-foot long reflecting pool that mirrors both the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Lined by walking paths and giant elm trees on both sides, it plays host to more than 24 million visitors each year.

But time has not been kind to the pool or its surroundings. The asphaltic roofing material originally used to line the pool and cover the soft soil underneath made for a leaky and uneven bottom. The concrete slab poured on top to remedy the problem in the 1970s has settled, cracked and leaks.

“They were putting an excess of 200 million gallons of water into the pool every year just to keep water in it,” said Corman Construction Project Engineer Tom Mulcahy.

“Water was seeping into the ground and concrete slabs around it. The pool was pulling away from its edge and there were large gaps in places where water was leaking into the ground.”

The National park Service has also asked for a small water treatment building to be erected nearby, which will put ozone into the water to treat and allow recirculation. Other parts of the restoration include adding new security bollards and changing some of the sidewalks by the Lincoln Memorial to offer a larger secured area and create more capacity for crowds.

Getting to work

Mulcahy says the project has required a complicated choreography of crews working on different facets of the enormous job. At its peak, there were roughly 60 workers on site each day from Corman Construction alone, plus other subcontractors completing other tasks.

By far one of the biggest and most challenging aspects of the job has been driving the more than 2,300 piles into a soft ground.

“We used southern pine timber piles because it’s a marine-like environment considering brackish soil with salt water coming in from the tidal basin,” said Mulcahy.

“We’re on very soft soil with bedrock 50 feet down. When we would put a pile in the ground, the weight of the hammer would drive it down 20 or 25 feet because the soil is so soft. You had to be very careful because it’s easy to drive these piles right to bedrock and you wouldn’t know till you hit it and broke the pile.”

Despite the care they took, about 5 percent of the piles were snapped off. Crews remedied the situation by driving one on either side of it.

Two Junttan PM 23LC pile driving rigs performed the bulk of the piles with a kind of efficiency Mulcahy hadn’t seen before. “These rigs were almost like an excavator on tracks with pile driving attachments to them. They were all hydraulically operated with leads that were hooked onto them so everything was all in one piece.”

Using claws, the Junttan picked up the pile itself, lined it up and then used the attached hammer to drive the pile down.

“On good days, we were able to get 80 to 90 piles driven in an eight-hour shift with one of those rigs and we used them for a total of 35 days across three months.”

Another feature that helped increase efficiency was the real-time data the rigs displayed every time a hammer hit a pile, offering a window into how much capacity an individual pile had.

Though driving the pile went swiftly, it was the prep work that had crews scrambling. “We had steel pile shoes to fit on the bottom end of the pile to protect it from cracking if the pile hit rock on the way down, but we had to shave the pile down to get that boot on there And the top end had to be shaved down to fit in into the pool, that’s a lot of prep work.

“When you’re into this kind of capacity it’s a major job to get 100 piles ready every day and get ahead of these guys. It took pretty much a crew and a half just to do prep of piles every day – two or three with chainsaw and the rest marking the piles where they needed to be shaved down.”

Mulcahy is satisfied with the relatively smooth running of the project, but if there was one thing he’d do differently, it would be to order larger pile shoes that would eliminate the need to shave the piles and cut down on the prep work.

“The Junttan machines were perfect; we made the exact right decision to use them. It was just the little things like the pile shoes that we’ll tweak in the future.”

A mechanically-minded man himself, Lincoln would surely approve of the systematic approach to rehabilitating the place he calls home.

Once again Junttan demonstrated the world that by using right equipment and modern technology, pile driving is the right method for deep foundations also in the near proximity of valuable cultural monuments, like the famous Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. Two Junttan pile driving rigs drove over 2000 pieces of 50-foot timber piles for the foundation of the re-constructed reflecting pool, totaling up to 100 piles per day. The new pool is anticipated to be ready for use in spring 2012.
Pictures by Laura Vink
